THE ACHIEVEMENTS
Ishtar Gate
The Ishtar Gate is at the entrance to the city of Babylon. Nebuchadnezzar II built it in around 575 BCE. The height is over 38 feet and still stands today. Today, it is 47 feet tall and 32 feet wide, although when it was found, it was 45 feet high. It was one of the only buildings still standing in Babylon when archaeologists explored it. The Ishtar Gate was moved piece by piece from Iraq to a museum between 1899 and World War II, and was rebuilt. I think that the Ishtar Gate is an achievement because it is a mighty structure still standing.
The Sundial
The sundial is a time device used for showing the hours each day. It was invented around 3500 BCE which was an obelisk that cast a shadow. Sundials are the oldest known devices that are used to measure time. What it shows depends on the rotation and movement of the sun. If the sun is coming from the East, the shadow of the point coming up from the middle will be pointing in the opposite direction, therefore declaring the time. The sundial helped Neo-Babylonians keep track of their day and must've help them have a consistent schedule.
The Hanging Gardens
The hanging gardens are one of the seven wonders of the ancient world. It is a large structure with plants decorating the whole place. It was build by Nebuchadnezzar at around 600 BCE. It was used to comfort his wife in order to remind her of the luscious land with greenery appose to the mainly dryer land. The plants stayed living by a system that lets the river's water travel through the building. The dimensions were about 56 miles in length, 80 feet thick and 320 feet high. The hanging garden is massive and looks magnificent.
The Ziggurat
Finally, Nebuchadnezzar had rebuilt the ziggurat. It was a temple that had many floors sort of resembling the shape of a pyramid. They were made out of sun-baked bricks. The time it was rebuilt was from 605 to 562 BCE. The people of Neo-Babylonia called the ziggurat the "House of the Platform Between Heaven and Earth." The ziggurat was a mighty place building and looks like it took a long time to be built.
